Vincent Ledy

It is hard not to root for Vincent Ledy. In a region where the best vineyard land is usually passed down through centuries of aristocratic inheritance, Ledy completely started from scratch. He spent years cutting his teeth and learning the ropes at the highly respected Domaine Lécheneaut in Nuits-Saint-Georges. While working there, he slowly scraped together whatever tiny parcels of old vines he could afford, literally making his first few vintages in his garage.

Today, he is one of the most thrilling cult figures in the Côte de Nuits, and a massive part of that is his radical, hands-off approach in the cellar. If you have been following the exciting shift in Burgundy toward the "infusion" style of winemaking, Ledy is an absolute master of the craft. He is famously terrified of new oak—he outright refuses to use it—and instead relies on whole-cluster fermentations, native yeasts, and virtually zero added sulfur. Rather than aggressively punching down the grapes to extract dark color and heavy tannins, he treats the fruit delicately, gently steeping it, like tea, to pull out only the purest elements from the grapes.

This infusion approach completely flips the script on Nuits-Saint-Georges. The village is historically famous for producing broad, muscular, and sometimes fiercely tannic Pinot Noir. But Ledy's 2022 Premier Cru "Les Porets Saint-Georges" is a total revelation of elegance. Sourced from ancient vines planted in the 1930s (that’s almost 100 years old now!) on a prime slope of limestone and gravel, this wine is wildly ethereal. It pours with a high-toned aromatic profile of wild strawberry, medicinal cherry, and crushed rose petals that almost tricks you into thinking you are smelling a delicate Chambolle-Musigny. But on the palate, that signature Nuits-Saint-Georges depth kicks in, delivering an earthy, intensely stony, and beautifully structured finish.

Vincent Ledy is one of the young, exciting voices to emerge from Nuits-Saint-Georges in recent years — a small-scale grower making thoughtful, terroir-driven Pinot Noir at a moment when so much of Burgundy feels out of reach. Les Porets-Saint-Georges is one of the village's top 1er Crus, sitting on the southern side of Nuits near the famous Les Saint-Georges. The wines from this part of the appellation tend to be structured and serious — the muscular, ageworthy face of Nuits. 2022 gave Pinot Noir ripe, generous fruit with surprisingly good freshness.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0044/1208/0163/files/Bottle-of-Vincent-Ledy-Nuits-Saint-Georges-1er-Cru-Les-Porets-2022-White-Wine-Flatiron-SF.jpg?v=1772492474
