Weingut Harm

Maria Harm and her husband Andreas started farming and making wine in 2010 with vines in the Wachau and a winery across the border in Kremstal. They are one of the few estates fully committed to biodynamic viticulture, with Andreas actually holding a PhD in organic agriculture and is a consultant for others in Austria.

Because the winery is in Kremstal they are not allowed to be a part of Vinea Wachau, and therefore can't use the typical "quality" designations of Steinfeder, Federspiel or Smaragd. But this also means they are not beholden to the alcohol minimums and are able to focus on expressing each site and each vintage and purely as possible.

In the cellar, they are unsurprisingly minimal in their interventions. Their natural yeasts move along at their own pace, taking up to 8 months to finish fermenting. The complexity achieved is outstanding and the only drawback could be considered the reticence sometimes experienced in top bottles, with wines needing a few extra years in bottle to hit their peak. The wait is well worth it and their entry level wines give more than enough pleasure to enjoy in the near term.
