The Knebel family has been growing grapes in the Lower Mosel village of Winningen since 1643. Blessed with a collection of top parcels and 40- to 70-year-old vines, many of which are un-grafted. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThis is pretty extreme country for Riesling. The village is far to the north; it's the most northerly white wine-producing village in Germany. The slopes are even steeper than in the Middle Mosel. But the rocks and minerals are virtually the same with plenty of that quintessential Mosel slate. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eOrganic viticulture is difficult in these extreme conditions, but Matthias Knebel does it anyway. He is dedicated to farming with minimal intervention and relies on small yields, fewer canes, natural competition, and old vines. He has paid a severe price for this, with very small crops in recent vintages.
