Weingut Markus Altenburger

Markus’ family has been in the Burgenland, specifically the limestone-schist layered Leithaberg sub-region, for over 500 years. Like most of the farmers in the area, the ancestry farms were mixed-use with animals, agricultural crops, and wine.

Markus, along with many of his neighbors and contemporaries decided to focus his family estate into producing world class wines. After a stint at oenology school, he converted most of the 11-acre vineyard into Blaufränkisch vineyards. This native Austrian red grape has been beguiling a new generation of Austrians for several decades, yet is only recently catching the international attention it deserves. It is as terroir transparent as Pinot Noir, incredibly food friendly, with top examples aging as gracefully as Cabernet Sauvignon.

With so much attention spent on his favorite grape we are loving Markus interpretations. Whether his minerally, straight, and juicy Tuesday-night-wines and his more serious age worthy examples, these are bottles worth seeking out and enjoying.
