It comes off La Playita, the coolest corner of the Alfaro farm in Corralitos and the source of all their Gruner: a small south-facing slope planted in 2008, named 'little beach' for its sandy loam soil, sitting less than four miles from the fog machine of Monterey Bay. The fruit is whole-cluster pressed and fermented slowly with native yeasts at cellar temperature, then rested in neutral barrels and stainless so nothing gets between you and the grape's peppery citrus snap. Richard and Mary Kay Alfaro sold an artisan bread business in 1997 to buy an old apple orchard here; son Ryan now runs the cellar with a deliberately non-interventionist touch.
