Alois Lageder builds Porer around one goal, freshness, and gets there by combining several different winemaking approaches in a single wine. In 2024 part of the fruit was made the classic way, part had short skin contact and extra time on its lees, and part was fermented whole-cluster. All of it fermented spontaneously in a mix of large casks and stainless steel, then spent about nine months on the lees. The grapes come from Magrè and Salorno, from vines planted between 210 and 740 metres on stony, sandy soils with a very high limestone content. Pinot Grigio is the most widely planted white grape in Alto Adige, so it's a pleasure to see a family house founded in 1823 treat it as something worth experimenting with rather than a commodity. Look for a faint red shimmer in the straw-yellow colour.
