Francesco Annesanti’s cantina is in a rural part of Umbria where there are no other vines for miles in any direction. Born from the property of Francesco Annesanti's grandparents, like almost all peasant properties of the past, which aimed at self-sufficiency, it also incorporates, in addition to the vines, land cultivated with olive trees and arable land for the production of cereals and legumes. Farming in no particular appellation, his wines are labeled simply as “Umbrian.” Although teeming with life, the land the cantina sits mostly consists of clay soils and is flat. Not exactly a recipe for exceptional terroir, but one becomes instantly aware of how special this land is once you experience his wines.Add to that Franceso’s passion, dedication and undeniable talent which adds an essence to his wine that is inherently undefinable. He literally does everything himself, from the biodynamic farming right down to personally dipping each bottle in wax and hand labeling. His terra cotta amphorae were custom made to support the miniscule quantities that he works with. He even fashioned his own desk and only bottles during clear skies and a waning moon! Even in a world filled with dedicated crafts folks he is one of only a handful of growers that are this meticulously aware of every aspect of their operation. Because of this his wines are strikingly harmonious, impeccably balanced, and beautifully transparent. Simply put, the wines are incredibly joyous, unique and full of character, without being the least bit rustic. This is the epitome of wine made as an expression of craft as opposed to a homogenized product.
