From the producer: Owned by the colorful Denise Esola, a woman who has lived enough for multiple lifetimes, this vineyard lies in the heart of Amador’s Shenandoah Valley. Her head-trained, dry-farmed Zinfandel vines are planted on granitic soils and have perhaps the smallest berries and clusters I have seen on the variety. The resulting wines are fragrant and structured expressions of the grape—among my favorite wines we make every year. The wines from the vineyard seem fitting for one run by a former dancer, they are showy, lithe, and fun!

Embracing the heritage of ancient vineyards and ensuring they continue to prosper is the most noble duty of today's California vigneron. Bedrock Wine Co. has used this concept as the foundation of their winery, farming vineyards themselves and continuing to support other growers who work with historic sites. There's no winery in the state that sees such a diverse range of revered vineyards like the guys at Bedrock. The story of place is undoubtedly where it all starts, but the quality of wines from this duo represent the very best that California old vines have to offer.

The duo behind Bedrock are Morgan Twain-Peterson and Chris Cottrell. Morgan grew up working alongside his father, Joel Peterson in the vineyard and cellars of the family winery, Ravenswood. A child prodigy, he began making his own wine, Vino Bambino, at age five and, starting with the 1986 vintage, it was poured at top restaurants in New York City. In 2007, Morgan founded Bedrock Wine Co. using a converted chicken coop on the outskirts of Sonoma.

Morgan met Chris in NYC at the small boutique wine shop they worked at on the Upper East Side. A strong friendship grew, and after a decade selling fine wine in NYC and many harvests with Morgan he received a call from his buddy telling him it was time the two made wine together.

The vineyards they use are not the only “old-school” thing about Bedrock: whole cluster fermentation, native yeast and minimal intervention are harnessed to highlight the complexity of these ancient sites. The resulting wines are powerful and concentrated yet balanced and elegant; delicious young but capable of developing over the decades.

WE 91
"Although full bodied, this wine is light-hearted, jammy and fresh-tasting, offering ripe strawberry flavors on a good frame of moderate acidity and light tannins. It finds excellent balance between the effusive fruit character and a tangy, lip-smacking texture." -Jim Gordon
