What more can one say about this wine. One of California's greatest winemakers working with an iconic old vine Zinfandel. Really more of a field blend since the 130 year old Bedrock home vineyard is planted to mostly old clones of Zin but there are over 30 other "mixed blacks" varieties interplanted.  Great now but sure to be magical in 10 years.

Embracing the heritage of ancient vineyards and ensuring they continue to prosper is the most noble duty of today's California vigneron. Bedrock Wine Co. has used this concept as the foundation of their winery, farming vineyards themselves and continuing to support other growers who work with historic sites. There's no winery in the state that sees such a diverse range of revered vineyards like the guys at Bedrock. The story of place is undoubtedly where it all starts, but the quality of wines from this duo represent the very best that California old vines have to offer.

The duo behind Bedrock are Morgan Twain-Peterson and Chris Cottrell. Morgan grew up working alongside his father, Joel Peterson in the vineyard and cellars of the family winery, Ravenswood. A child prodigy, he began making his own wine, Vino Bambino, at age five and, starting with the 1986 vintage, it was poured at top restaurants in New York City. In 2007, Morgan founded Bedrock Wine Co. using a converted chicken coop on the outskirts of Sonoma.

Morgan met Chris in NYC at the small boutique wine shop they worked at on the Upper East Side. A strong friendship grew, and after a decade selling fine wine in NYC and many harvests with Morgan he received a call from his buddy telling him it was time the two made wine together.

The vineyards they use are not the only “old-school” thing about Bedrock: whole cluster fermentation, native yeast and minimal intervention are harnessed to highlight the complexity of these ancient sites. The resulting wines are powerful and concentrated yet balanced and elegant; delicious young but capable of developing over the decades.

Antonio Galloni

"One the brawnier wines in this range, the Bedrock The Bedrock Heritage Wine is dense and powerful, as wines from this Sonoma Valley site so often are. Black cherry, chocolate, licorice, spice, bay leaf and earthy tones add complexity as well as nuance. This virile, potent red is going to need a number of years to be at its very best, but it is already super-impressive. The field blend is approximately 75% Zinfandel, 20% Carignan and 5% Mataro, but includes a total of 27 varieties." -Vinous

"Bold aromas of rose petal and orange blossom open to dynamic blackberry, licorice and smoked pepper flavors, building tension toward medium-grained tannins. Zinfandel, Carignan and Mataro."
