Brothers Jacob and Frederick Beringer founded the house in St. Helena in 1876. They were also among the first in Napa to build a gravity-flow winery and to hand-dig caves into the hillsides. Frederick's 17-room stone mansion, the Rhine House, is on the National Register of Historic Places and is still the centre of the estate. The house credits winemakers Myron Nightingale and Ed Sbragia with taking its Cabernet in new directions, and this 1987 Private Reserve is a mature bottle that shows where that ambition led.
