beronia-rioja-reserva-1986-750ml
Beronia Rioja Reserva 1986

Beronia exists because a group of friends from a San Sebastián gastronomic society decided in 1973 that they wanted a Rioja worthy of the food they were cooking, so they built a bodega at Ollauri in Rioja Alta and made one. By the early 1980s the sherry house González Byass had taken over, and the winemaking passed to Matías Calleja, who would go on to spend his entire career there — so a 1986 Reserva like this one comes from the first stretch of a very long and very consistent tenure. Beronia's signature is its barrels: a deliberate mix of American and French oak rather than the all-American convention, which gives the Reservas a slightly firmer, less overtly vanilla-scented frame. Nineteen eighty-six was a good rather than a monumental Rioja vintage, which makes this a gentler, more delicate bottle at forty years old than the great years would be — the appeal here is maturity and detail, not power. It comes from a private cellar, not from the bodega. Stand it upright for a day, decant carefully, and drink it soon after opening.
