Campillo is the Rioja Alavesa estate of the Martínez Zabala family, whose landmark château-style winery outside Laguardia, sitting in the middle of its own vineyard, opened in 1990 — this bottle comes from the winery's very first years. The house works almost entirely with Tempranillo and ages in American oak, and the combination of that oak, the grape's naturally high acidity and a cool, still bodega is what lets traditional Rioja go this distance. It comes from a private collection rather than from the bodega's own stocks.
