Renato Vacca was born and raised in Barbaresco. His family’s history there goes back generations. The estate was originally purchased by Renato's great-grandfather in the 1920’s from the son of Domizio Cavazza, the father of Barbaresco. For most of its history the family estate sold the majority of their grapes to Produttori del Barbaresco, the local cooperative where Renato's father, Adriano was a founding member. In 1987, Renato convinced his father to start producing their own wines.

All that personal and generational knowledge made Renato one of the most experienced growers in Barbaresco and he knew its sites and soils intimately. Vineyards at Cantina del Pino are lovingly tended to without the use of harsh chemicals and synthetic fertilizers. In the winery, Renato guided his wines with a soft touch and while a traditionalist in many respects he was not afraid to put his own stamp, such as the inclusion of a small percentage of whole clusters. The wines are powerful and intense yet elegant and supremely refined.

Renato’s wife Franca and his father Adriano, who still directs viticulture at the estate, along with his cousin Aldo Vacca at Produttori are now continuing the work that Renato began.

"The 2016 Barbaresco Albesani is the most reticent wine in this range. I have seen that before with this wine, only to see it blossom with a few years in bottle. Powerful and tightly wound, the Albesani is a Barbaresco to cellar for at least a few years. At this stage, it is all acid, tannin and brawn. Super-classic in the best sense of the term, the 2016 really only starts to blossom with about 24 hours of air! All of the classic Albesani breadth and inner sweetness is there, it just needs time to reveal itself." -Vinous

"Camphor, tilled soil, rose and wild red berry aromas slowly take shape along with graphite. The radiant palate seamlessly combines structure and elegance, featuring juicy Morello cherry, spiced cranberry, star anise and thyme alongside tightly wound, fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity provides balance and an ageworthy structure. Drink 2024–2036." -Kerin O'keefe

Staff review: Why I love Cantina del Pino, Barbaresco

1996 was the first year I visited Barbaresco. I tasted Cantina del Pino and met the winemaker, Renato Vacca.
He was very influential in my development as a specialist in Langhe wines. We walked around Albesani in the town of Neive and dug in the soil of the vineyard where we found clay, limestone, and the famous Sant'Agata marl.
The Barbaresco from this vineyard is complete in body but finished with unmistakable elegance and lingering acidity.
You may end up spending a lot of time just smelling the pinecones, forest floor, tea, mint and basil!
