That approach belongs to Chantal and Gérard Perse, who arrived at Monbousquet in 1993 and set about restructuring the vineyard and building new cellars. In 1998, two vintages before this one, they drained the whole property, laying the drains 2.4 metres below the surface. The estate sits 500 metres from Saint-Émilion's southern slopes, with warm, deep gravel in the south and sandy clay in the north. The Perses compare their gravel to the soils at Cheval Blanc and Figeac, where it lets the later-ripening Cabernets get fully ripe (not bad company to keep). They took over from the Querre family, who bought the estate in 1945 and spent three decades rebuilding the vineyard.
