He was no newcomer: Bo had worked every harvest at Montelena since 1972. The growing season was cool, with a wet winter and a cool spring. It also brought a record crop, so heavy that the vines were thinned five times to bring yields down (that's a lot of fruit left on the ground for the sake of what stayed on the vine). Rain in mid-September caused some problems, but Montelena finished picking before the major October storms arrived, and the estate describes the vintage as big wines from clean, fat, juicy berries. More than four decades on, this is a chance to taste a turning point at one of Calistoga's historic houses.
