Al and Boots Brounstein founded Diamond Creek in 1968. Planting Bordeaux varieties on remote Diamond Mountain went against the thinking of the day, and the estate is made up of four distinct vineyards, each with its own microclimate and soil. Gravelly Meadow was planted that first year: about five acres of flat, prehistoric riverbed at 550 feet, with porous brown soil full of small stones and river rocks. It drains so quickly that the vines have to struggle for water. It's also one of the cooler spots on the property. It's usually the first Diamond Creek Cabernet poured in a line-up. Aged single-vineyard California Cabernet doesn't turn up often, and this bottle is for someone who wants to taste a place rather than just talk about it.
