Petit Manseng has thick skins and tiny berries and is traditionally left hanging into late autumn for Jurançon moelleux; taken dry, as it is here with about ten percent Gros Manseng alongside, it gives a white with unusual weight and grip, and the clay vessels build texture without any of the vanilla a barrel would add. Domaine Bellegarde sits in the Pyrenean foothills outside Monein, twenty kilometers west of Pau, where Pascal Labasse trained at Château la Tour Blanche in Sauternes before taking over the family estate in 1985; his son Maxime joined him in 2019. The estate is planted entirely to the indigenous white varieties of the southwest, on clay and loam soils, some parcels scattered with the same round galets you find in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
