Ghislaine Barthod and her son Clement planted half a hectare of Chardonnay in Chambolle in the mid-2010s, on the commune's typically thin topsoil over limestone gravel, which is exactly what the parcel name means. It is raised for a year in a half-and-half mix of used 500-litre barrels and terracotta jars, so there is essentially no oak flavor in the wine, only texture. 2024 was a punishing growing season in the Cote de Nuits, with heavy rain, frost and relentless mildew slashing yields, but the Chardonnay that made it through came in with unusual purity and tension. Barthod's is sleek and saline rather than rich, and it punches well above its appellation.
