Domaine Hudelot-Baillet Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2016

by Domaine Hudelot-Baillet

A beautiful Grand Cru in Chambolle, a bit deeper and meatier than Musigny, but still lovely aromatics. Hudelot-Noellat makes a top tier version.

Domaine Hudelot-Baillet

This relatively new Chambolle-Musigny producer was founded in 1981 by Joel Hudelot and his wife Chantal Baillet. Their son-in-law, Dominique Le Guen, is now in charge of this great property. The cellars are in the village, and the Pinot Noir vineyards lie entirely in Chambolle-Musigny. The Gamay comes from Gilly-les-Citeaux, which is just below the D974 road, and the Chardonnay comes from just above the village in Reulle-Vergy.

"The 2016 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru consists of two barrels. Again, the aromatics are very closed at the moment: deep broody dark fruit, briary, subtle violet notes eked out with vigorous swirling of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannin, a fine bead of acidity, quite pure and nicely structured with a candied, cassis and black cherry finish that lingers long in the mouth. I like the elegance here when it could have just tipped over into blowsiness. Excellent." -Neal Martin
