The name goes back a long way. An official act from the early 16th century already lists this 52-ouvrée parcel as part of the estate of the Dukes of Burgundy, and those 52 ouvrées still add up to the same 2.15 hectares today. (An ouvrée was the patch one vigneron could work alone in a day.) The vines grow on a very steep, southeast-facing slope that drains well, in poor, stony, strongly calcareous white marl. The family has owned the clos since 1804, and Guillaume d'Angerville, the sixth generation, has run the biodynamically farmed estate since 2003. The domaine says Clos des Ducs evolves slowly and reaches its full depth at around ten years, with great vintages often needing longer.
