It was made to mark the 85th anniversary of La Alteña, the distillery in the Jalisco highlands that Don Felipe Camarena founded in 1937 and that is home to El Tesoro. Third-generation Master Distiller Carlos Camarena made it with Fred Noe, the seventh-generation Master Distiller at Jim Beam. Camarena has known the Noe family for about thirty years. Those barrels were filled with El Tesoro Blanco. Each one was tapped only when it reached peak maturity, after at least 36 months. Under all that wood is the house's old-school tequila: estate-grown highland agave, cooked in old-fashioned hornos and crushed under a two-ton volcanic-stone tahona. It's a collaboration that makes sense for bourbon drinkers who are curious about tequila, and for tequila lovers who want to see what serious barrel time can do.
