2020 as we all know was like no summer that Oregon has ever experienced before. Record heat, wildfires along with COVID created unprecedented challenges which unfortunately translated to a lot of wineries not producing any reds for the vintage. A heart wrenching decision for sure not to mention a financial hit. But Sashi and Raj are perhaps some of the most nimble winemakers anywhere. In response to these conditions they produced the lovely De Mures. In order to avoid the dreaded smoke taint they picked the grapes for De Mures earlier than they would for their typical Seven Springs Pinot Noir and instead of the typical maceration time of 2 to 3 weeks, this spent only 8 days on its skins. When smoke deposits on the grapes, the resulting wine will take on smoky notes that, unlike the natural smokiness that some wines display, is rather unpleasant. More ashtray, less campfire. Even though this was born of difficulty, and decisions made under immense pressure it displays just how immensely talented Sashi, Raj and their crew at Evening Land are. The early pick and short maceration resulted in wine of immense charm geared for immediate consumption. Somewhere in between red and rose, this is vin de soif made from some of the best grapes this side of the prime meridian. Whole cluster fermented, pale and lovely, it is filled with joyous aromas that are deeply floral with notes of wild forest berries. The wine is so pretty but surprised us with its silky texture and tannic structure. Brisk and bright on the finish we absolutely love this wine and grabbed as much as we could.
