faustino-rioja-gran-reserva-1968-750ml
Faustino Rioja Gran Reserva 1968

A Gran Reserva now closing in on sixty years old, and still alive — the kind of bottle that explains why traditional Rioja developed a cult following among collectors of mature wine. Faustino works out of Oyon in Rioja Alavesa, an estate that traces back to Eleuterio Martinez Arzok in the second half of the 19th century; his son Faustino began bottling in 1930 and the third generation started exporting around 1960, right around the time this wine was made. The recipe behind that longevity is not complicated: high-acid Tempranillo, years of aging in oak barrels before release, and then decades resting in cool, humid cellars, which is exactly what keeps a wine like this from collapsing. This bottle came to us out of a private collection, not from the bodega. Stand it upright for a couple of days, decant carefully off what will be substantial sediment, and drink it that evening.
