The 2000 season in the Douro swung between extremes. Half the year's rain fell in April and May, then the summer turned dry, and the first half of August was extremely hot. Long warm days in late August and early September followed, and Fonseca's wines came out very full-bodied, deeply coloured and highly aromatic. The house releases a Vintage Port only in years it judges outstanding and built for long ageing. The blend comes from its own estates: Cruzeiro and Santo António in the Pinhão valley, which have gone into Fonseca's Vintage Port for a century, and Panascal in the Távora valley. Here's a piece of trivia: every Fonseca Vintage Port except the 1955 was made by one of three members of the Guimaraens family.
