The soils are Sobrante loam shot through with red chert and serpentine gravels — the geology that gave the estate its name — organically farmed in Napa's Chiles Valley. Up at that altitude the vines sit above the fog with cold nights, which keeps acidity high and alcohol in check, so this is Zinfandel of bay laurel, madrone and forest floor rather than sweet jam. 2019 was a generous Napa vintage, which rounds out the site's natural austerity.
