The site is Alsace's 51st Grand Cru, but its name goes back much further. It first appears in the land register of the Abbey of Pairis in 1338. The slopes face east on the sub-Vosges hills at 240 to 320 meters and are mostly granite, with limestone mixed in. A strong foehn effect, the warm, dry wind that drops off the mountains, gives Ammerschwihr its own microclimate, especially in spring and autumn. Jean-Baptiste took over from his father, Jean-Marie, in 1996 and converted the vineyards to biodynamics in 2003, with Demeter certification since 2007. His daughter Laure is the 15th generation. The house counts this cuvée among its top wines and calls it a large, dry, powerful and complex Riesling.
