The fruit comes from the Bazzano Vineyard, just north of the town of Fulton. There, 7.5 acres of Chardonnay planted in 1996 are organically dry-farmed on Yolo soils. The vines are clone 4, a Wente selection that brings rich tropical fruit along with high natural acidity, so you get ripeness and tension together. Jaam Moynihan and Bobby Huff (the label name comes from their two middle names) lightly foot-tread the bins and deliberately oxidize the juice. Then they set the barrels out in the sun to get native fermentation going. The wine rests in neutral puncheons, neutral French barrels and steel drums, so the oak stays out of the way, and some malic acid is kept naturally, which is a big part of why it tastes so lively. The two do everything themselves, from vineyard to cellar, with no tasting room.
