Steinagrund means \"stony ground,\" and it lives up to the name. The vines grow in gravel and stone with a light covering of loess at 220–240 metres. That's a twist for Wagram, which sits on Europe's most extensive loess formations: fine, wind-blown glacial particles laid down on the ancient bed of the Danube. The vines, averaging 30 years old, haven't seen herbicides in more than 25 years, and the vineyard has been farmed to organic standards since 2021. In the cellar Franz Leth Jr., the third generation to run the family estate, keeps things simple: hand-picking, a few hours of whole-bunch skin contact, native yeast and stainless steel, then rest on the lees until bottling in February. (A fun aside: Franz Leth senior planted a vineyard of more than 250 rare and nearly extinct grape varieties to keep them from disappearing.)
