Luis Seabra rents this vineyard from one of his consulting clients, and although it's planted to a whole spread of local varieties, he picks out only the Alfrocheiro, which is the whole point of his \"Mono\" series: one grape at a time, so the site can speak. It's also a deliberate snub of Dão's house style — Seabra finds Touriga Nacional and Malvasia too aromatic, so he built his Dão range around the grapes nobody was flattering. This is a man who spent a career as a soil researcher and ten years working under Dirk Niepoort before starting his own tiny winery in 2013, and who has identified the soils in every parcel he farms; he owns almost none of it, and calls owning them a multigenerational project. Ethereal is the word his importer uses, and for a Portuguese red that's a rare and welcome thing to be.
