Moschomavro is indigenous to Siatista, in the Askio mountains of Greek Macedonia, and was down to a handful of old plots by the 1970s; nearly everything planted today traces back to cuttings Dimitris Diamantis took from his grandfather's hand-grafted, century-old vines, the same material he used to replant 18 hectares in the 1990s. The grape is naturally pale and light in tannin — a red variety that practically asks to be made as a rosé — and Diamantis's vineyards, on rocky limestone at 800 to 900 meters in a cool, almost Alpine climate, keep the acidity taut. He works with minimal intervention in vineyard and cellar. This is a dry, savory, mineral rosé rather than a fruity one, and considerably more interesting than most bottles that share its color.
