It comes from Tom Lubbe, who planned to take what he learned in the Roussillon back to South Africa. He stayed in the Roussillon instead and founded Matassa in 2003. The cuvée used to be called Brutal Rouge, a name Tom says was mostly a nod to the Brutal founders and their bar in Barcelona. At the Mas Ferriol property he pulled out all but one of eight hectares of vines to run a polycultural farm with animals, fruit trees and crops. The estate is certified organic and works soils of schist, marl, black slate and black marl. When the 2023 arrived we called it one of the most limited and deeply mineral reds in the Matassa lineup.
