In 2023, a year the Matthiassons call another perfect growing season, Sauvignon Blanc leads at 40%, with Ribolla Gialla, Semillon and a dash of Tocai Friulano. Each grape has a job: Sauvignon brings citrus snap, Ribolla adds seashell minerality and a nutty structure, and Semillon gives waxy weight. The Ribolla grows in the tiny Bengier Vineyard at the mouth of Dry Creek canyon, where George Vare grafted budwood that Josko Gravner himself gave him in 2001. That's a direct line back to Friuli. Malolactic fermentation is blocked to keep the acidity bright, and the wine rests at least a year in bottle before release.
