Contrada Guardiola sits at around 800 meters, just below the Passopisciaro winery, on pyroclastic soil roughly 15,000 years old. The estate describes the contrada as an ancient site running up to 1,000 meters along the edge of the lava flow from Etna's 1947 eruption. Andrea Franchetti came here in 2000, and Passopisciaro now makes six separate Nerello Mascalese bottlings. Guardiola has had its own label since 2011, built from a selection of the estate's older vines.
