This is Passopisciaro's bottling of it. The vines sit at 650 meters on the volcano's northern face, in a soil that's barely soil at all: a thin, brittle sheet of lava that splinters underfoot. Passopisciaro farms just 1.5 hectares here, organically. Andrea Franchetti came to Etna in 2000 after a decade making wine at Tenuta di Trinoro, and in 2008 he started bottling his top contrade separately. His point was that each lava flow, aspect and altitude makes a different wine. In the cellar the house keeps its own hand light so the site comes through.
