That flow has since broken down into thick gravel, and Passopisciaro's single hectare of Nerello Mascalese grows in it at 850 meters. This is one of the contrada bottlings Andrea Franchetti began making in 2008, when he decided his top sites on Etna's northern face were too different to blend away. Each sits on its own lava flow, at its own altitude and exposure. Franchetti came to Etna in 2000 after a decade at Tenuta di Trinoro, and he restored long-forgotten terraces of old vines here. Today the estate makes six separate Nerello Mascalese bottlings from 26 hectares, and Sciaranuova is a tiny one, at about 2,000 bottles a year. The cellar work is kept deliberately simple: the contrada wines ferment in steel and age in large neutral oak, so the site gets the say rather than the barrel.
