Lore Olds planted the vineyard in 1973 at 2,100 feet on the mountain's eastern face: fourteen acres of shallow red volcanic soil, dry-farmed and organically farmed, the winery running on solar rather than the grid, the fruit hand-picked into one-ton open-top bins, punched down by hand three times a day and pressed in an old basket press. Olds's landscape paintings appear on many of the labels. Elevation is the point here — it holds acidity in a grape that usually loses it, so this drinks like a structured mountain red rather than a jammy Napa Zin.
