Sylvain Cathiard Bourgogne Rouge 2020 [NET]

$14799

Sébastien Cathiard runs one of Vosne-Romanée's most coveted addresses, and his Bourgogne Rouge is the bottling that gets it into the hands of mortals. The fruit comes from tiny parcels near the village — including a plot in Flagey just opposite Clos Vougeot — farmed and vinified with the same precision Cathiard applies to his Grand Crus. Strict destemming, careful extraction, aging in used oak. The result is unmistakably Cathiard: silky, perfumed, and built for transparency rather than weight. The 2020 vintage gives it ripe, lifted fruit without losing the address.

"Here the expressive nose is derived more from the red side of the fruit spectrum with additional floral and earth nuances where the latter can also be found on the equally agreeably textured and slightly denser flavors that possess even better depth and length. This is a terrific Bourgogne and worth you interest." —Allen Meadows

Antonio Galloni

"The 2020 Bourgogne Rouge comes from two parcels, one close to where Les Croix Blanches is located. This has quite a high-toned, very floral bouquet that errs close to Syrah in personality. The palate is ripe on the entry with soft black plummy fruit, a touch of dessicated orange peel on the finish that is just a little short." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"The 2020 Bourgogne Rouge is now a blend of two parcels, one in Gilly-lès-Cîteaux and the other in Croix Blanche in the commune of Vosne-Romanée. Delivering aromas of cherries, sweet berries and peonies, it's a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and charming effort that's matured in used barrels." —William Kelley

More about Sylvain Cathiard

Cathiard is a tiny domain - there never is very much wine. You enter a spick and span white stucco suburban home in the center of the small village of Vosne Romanee. There is a walled vineyard outside the front door. Go down the staircase and you are in a minuscule cuverie and barrel room. Not a lot of barrels here either. No wonder the wine is sold in 6 bottle cases.

Sebastien Cathiard has been slowly assuming control of this top estate in Vosne-Romanée from his father Sylvain. He is now fully in charge, but the wines have been so good for so long that he wisely has changed very little. They continue to farm meticulously, de-stem and rigorously sort all the fruit prior to fermentation. The only thing he has changed is the gradual reduction of new oak, seeking a bit more purity of terroir expression.
