What is this beer?
Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen, based in Beersel just outside Brussels, is one of Belgium’s most revered traditional lambic producers. Their Oude Kriek is a blend of young and old lambics, macerated with whole fresh cherries (including pits) at a ratio of about 30% fruit by volume. After months of refermentation, the beer is bottled unfiltered and unpasteurized, continuing to develop complexity with age.
Why get this beer?
This is not a sweetened, commercial “cherry beer” but an authentic lambic, tart and complex, made in tiny quantities by a cult producer. 3 Fonteinen is regarded as one of the best lambic makers in Belgium, and their Oude Kriek is a benchmark example—serious, age-worthy, and deeply satisfying for fans of sour beer and natural wine alike.
What does this beer taste like?
Intense cherry fruit with almond-like notes from the pits, layered over a base of bright acidity, earthy funk, and subtle oak. Bone-dry, complex, and refreshing with a long, tart finish.
When should you drink this beer?
Delicious young for fresh fruit expression, but can age 5–10 years in bottle, developing more savory depth. Serve well chilled in a tulip glass. Perfect with charcuterie, goat cheese, or rich desserts like chocolate torte.
