Contrada Guardiola is an ancient domain between 800 and 1,000 m (2,600 to 3,300 ft) above sea level, on the edge of the lava flow from Etna’s 1947 eruption. It produces a deep and complex wine with a rich taste of red fruit. We make this wine from a careful selection of some of our older nerello mascalese vines, which we started bottling separately beginning in 2011.

When Andrea Franchetti arrived in Sicily 20 years ago he wasn't there to reinvent the wheel. Much as he had done in Southern Tuscany with his first winery, Tenuta de Trinero, Andrea was there to repurpose and reinvigorate an ancient wine producing region. He was looking for the best raw ingredients for producing wines on the foot of Mount Etna.

He purchased an old farm and cellar near the town of Passopisciaro as well as some prime vineyard locations and got to work. Although grapes have been grown around this ancient volcano for several millennia, the region had been struggling to recover from two major eruptions in 1981 and again ten years later. Indeed the first eruption came just as the region was emerging from decades of economic depression after WWII.

Many of the vineyards were in such disrepair that they required a complete overhaul and occasionally replanting of the vines. It was while doing this difficult work that Andrea really began to appreciate the extraordinary terroir that Etna offers, with it’s warm, Southern Mediterranean Sun and high altitude, cold nights combining with the black, volcanic soils.

And as fortune would have it he wasn't alone. It was the beginning of an Etna renaissance, with other innovators like Marc De Grazia and Frank Cornelissen moving in alongside a new generation of local winemakers like the Benanti brothers and Salvo Foti. Though the styles ranged, they all focused on meticulous farming and highlighting the spectacular terroir of the mountain and it’s singular variety Nerello Mascalese.

In 2008 Andrea began bottling his 5 single vineyards separately as “Contrada” which is roughly similar to a Cru in France. Each site is so different in exposure, altitude and geological exposition that simply using the term Cru, as they do in Barolo and Barbaresco, didn't seem quite accurate. But for the ease of explanation I often refer to them as the 5 crus of Etna.

"Smoky and ashy in the glass, the 2022 Etna Rosso Contrada Guardiola opens with a burst of ashen stones and grilled herbs, evolving into crushed black cherries and lifted by hints of menthol. It sweeps across the palate with textures of pure silk as a polished wave of red and black fruits swirls around a core of lively acidity. Its structure comes through on the finish as a staining of primary concentration adds a firm grip. Saline minerals linger under an air of inner florals. The 2022 Guardiola was the result of two separate harvests that were about 20 days apart due to rain. This is a wine that contrasts stunning depth with an energetic feel." -Eric Guido

"The Passopisciaro 2022 Contrada G is a true beauty in a portfolio of wines that is very impressive across the board. The "G" stands for Guardiola, one of the most stunning vineyards anywhere, at 800 meters in elevation on the blackened volcanic cone with alberello (head-pruned) vines that have reached the 140-year mark. These factors shape a silky and very elegant wine with redcurrant, grilled herb and blue rosemary flower." -Monica Larner

"Contrada Guardiola is located at about 800 meters above sea level, directly on the road to Rampante, and offers a rounder, fuller and more generous expression of Nerello Mascalese. Aromas of lavender and aromatic herbs with notes of red fruits introduce a tannic palate supported by berries and creamy notes. The supporting acidity balances the weight of the tannins and extends the long and fresh finish."
