The highest cru at 1,000 m.a.s.l., at the highest confines of viti-culture on the northern side of Etna, Rampante is ancient, producing one of the finest, most aromatic wines of Mt. Etna because of the sandy character that the lava has acquired. Due to the altitude, it is typically the last contrada to ripen.

When Andrea Franchetti arrived in Sicily 20 years ago he wasn't there to reinvent the wheel. Much as he had done in Southern Tuscany with his first winery, Tenuta de Trinero, Andrea was there to repurpose and reinvigorate an ancient wine producing region. He was looking for the best raw ingredients for producing wines on the foot of Mount Etna.

He purchased an old farm and cellar near the town of Passopisciaro as well as some prime vineyard locations and got to work. Although grapes have been grown around this ancient volcano for several millennia, the region had been struggling to recover from two major eruptions in 1981 and again ten years later. Indeed the first eruption came just as the region was emerging from decades of economic depression after WWII.

Many of the vineyards were in such disrepair that they required a complete overhaul and occasionally replanting of the vines. It was while doing this difficult work that Andrea really began to appreciate the extraordinary terroir that Etna offers, with itโ€™s warm, Southern Mediterranean Sun and high altitude, cold nights combining with the black, volcanic soils.

And as fortune would have it he wasn't alone. It was the beginning of an Etna renaissance, with other innovators like Marc De Grazia and Frank Cornelissen moving in alongside a new generation of local winemakers like the Benanti brothers and Salvo Foti. Though the styles ranged, they all focused on meticulous farming and highlighting the spectacular terroir of the mountain and itโ€™s singular variety Nerello Mascalese.

In 2008 Andrea began bottling his 5 single vineyards separately as โ€œContradaโ€ which is roughly similar to a Cru in France. Each site is so different in exposure, altitude and geological exposition that simply using the term Cru, as they do in Barolo and Barbaresco, didn't seem quite accurate. But for the ease of explanation I often refer to them as the 5 crus of Etna.

"The 2022 Etna Rosso Contrada Rampante is intense, wafting up with all of the volcanic ash and stones that make up its soils, complicated by grilled herbs and citrus-laced blackberries. This is surprisingly juicy and energetic in feel, with a wave of vibrantly ripe red and blue fruits that swirl throughout as tactile minerals collect toward the close. It finishes with teeth-coating tannins and concentration, leaving a sensation of liquid stone and a resonance of tart cranberry toward the close. Wow, I swear I can sense the soil of the vineyard in the glass. Tasted from barrel." -Eric Guido

"From the Contrada Rampante, the Passopisciaro 2022 Contrada R shows extra color saturation and primary fruit with black cherry, plum and dusty spice. The wine is quite firm in terms of structure, and it shows prolonged length that is fueled by dark fruit flavors. This gorgeous vineyard is located at 1,000 meters in elevation and boasts 120-year-old vines. Like the other wines in this series, it sees 18 months in oak. This is a release of 3,300 bottles." -Monica Larner

"Contrada Rampante rises steeply to over 1,000 meters on pyroclastic and sandy soils. Deep notes of dark cherries, herbs and spices are accompanied by structured tannins that coat the cheeks. Fragrant flavors of lavender, wild herbs and Parma violets develop on the mid-palate, accompanied by a fresh acidity. It is intense, ferruginous, savory and spicy: in a class of its own."
