What is this wine?
Domaine Ballot-Millot, led by Charles Ballot, has become one of Meursault’s rising stars, crafting precise, terroir-driven Chardonnays from old vines across the Côte de Beaune. Perrières is the crown jewel of Meursault’s premiers crus, widely regarded as “grand cru in all but name,” famed for its stony soils and ability to produce wines of remarkable finesse and longevity. The 2020 vintage was warm but balanced, delivering whites of concentration, tension, and superb aging potential.

Why get this wine?
Ballot-Millot’s wines are gaining cult status for their combination of crystalline minerality and restrained power. His Perrières stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the village’s very best, offering grand cru pedigree at a fraction of the price. The 2020 vintage has produced a wine of both immediate beauty and decades-long cellaring capacity—an essential bottle for collectors of fine white Burgundy.

What does this wine taste like?
Lime zest, green apple, and white peach with layers of chalk, hazelnut, and acacia blossom. Intense yet refined, with electric acidity, precise structure, and a long, saline finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Best from 2026–2045. Decant if drinking young to reveal its layered complexity. Pair with lobster, scallops, turbot, or aged Comté.

Ballot-Millot et Fils is an outstanding domaine in Meursault with phenomenal holdings in the village's top crus, Charles Ballot is producing precise, tensile, racy yet exuberant wines. There is very little new oak used. These are modern white Burgundies, they are transparent and reflect their respective terroirs.

Charles has been in charge of the farming, winemaking, and cellar work since 2001. His grandparents started the domaine, and he inherited additional vines from his mother, who is related to the Lochardet-Dancer family. He farms according to lutte raisonnée — he works as organically as he can without sacrificing the crop. New oak is limited to 15% for village wines and up to 25% for the premier crus. The wines are bottled after about 16 months in barrel.

Professional Reviews

Burghound

"Smoky aromas of mineral reduction, green apple and just sliced lemon are also trimmed in hints of exotic tea. The succulent and highly energetic medium-bodied flavors possess a highly sophisticated mouthfeel while exuding plenty of minerality on the sappy finale that flashes even better depth and persistence. This is a terrific Perrières that should amply reward extended cellaring." -Allen Meadows

"The 2020 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru has a touch of reduction on the nose. It's well-defined, slightly more malic than its peers, with a deft touch of spice that emerges with aeration. The palate is slightly viscous on the entry; maybe the pH here is a little higher than others. As such, it just lacks its peers' persistence and mineralité on the finish. That said, re-tasting this wine over again, it coheres and belatedly unveils that terroir expression, prompting me to raise my score. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting." -Neal Martin

"The 2020 Meursault 1er Cru Perrières derives from similarly prime holdings, located just before the Clos des Perrières of Grivault. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of pear, green apple, freshly baked bread, Meyer lemon and oyster shell, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and sensual, with a satiny attack that leads into a rich, layered mid-palate. Given the location of the plot, it's not surprising that this is a broader, more "grand cru" interpretation of Perrières in contrast to some of the climat's more chiseled renditions." -William Kelley
