The 2021 Barolo is a wine of delicacy and finesse. Its understated depth emerges with a bit of time in the glass, making a strong impression. Firm yet polished tannins are the signature of wine that is going to need time to come into its own. In some ways, the 2021 reminds me of the 2019, but with more mid-palate pliancy and greater overall depth. Floral notes lift a core of red-toned fruit in a wine that offers many of the contrasts that make Barolo.

Bartolo made a name for himself resisting the modernizing trends in the region, encapsulated by a message he put on a hand-drawn bottle label: “No Barriques, No Berlusconi”.

He died a few years ago but the domain is now in the gifted hands of his daughter Maria Theresa, who has raised the profile even further with a series of fabulous vintages. Maria is still hewing rigorously to tradition (long macerations, and certainly no barriques!).

They are one of the very few domains to still release just one Barolo made from a blend of all their parcels (as was generally the case before single vineyard cuvees started to appear in the 1960s). 30% of the Barolo comes from Rocche di Annunziata in La Morra; the rest from three different vineyards in the commune of Barolo: Rue, San Lorenzo and Cannubi.

"This wine was bottled in the fall of 2024 and will hit the market in September 2025. The Bartolo Mascarello 2021 Barolo sees the same blend of five vineyards as the 2020 vintage, but this edition shines with brighter clarity and focus thanks to the excellent growing conditions of the growing season. The 2021 is beautifully lifted and vertical; however, it reveals growing complexity even at this nascent stage. Winemaking counted a long and careful 48 days of submerged cap, marking a traditional fermentation. The summer season was not too hot, but September saw above average temperatures for easy ripening. There was adequate water and the grapes showed no signs of stress or suffering, Maria Teresa Mascarello tells me. The wine is classic, crisp and linear with present tannins and a very long mouthfeel that continues with freshness and energy. It is terrific now, and we can expect more to come from this epic bottle." -Monica Larner

"Bottled in July 2024. Will be released in September 2025. Pale ruby. Impressive, savoury, minerally, deep nose with hints of raspberry. Still a little embryonic but already showing perfect balance between shy, brooding fruit, supple acidity and fine, deep tannins. Great purity of raspberry fruit on the finish. Lots of structure and deserves bottle age."
