Cru Beaujolais is no longer a secret among wine lovers. For about a decade now names like Lapierre, Foillard and Metras have been among the most sought after by collectors and everyday wine drinkers alike. We have long believed that the wines of Daniel Bouland were deserving of the same attention and devotion, and in the last couple of years that has become a reality.

Bouland's wines come from very old vines and seem to operate on three well-delineated layers: An airy top register of flowers and flint-smoke, the middle layer flush with refined (and sometimes powerful) red fruits, and precise, vividly mineral structures at the low register. It's this near- visualizable depth and detail that sets them apart. Bouland would probably make a great photographer.

The wines can age. Ten years is not asking too much. But most also drink wonderfully on release - especially the Chiroubles, Melanie, and Corcelette. They have brains and brawn. And, most importantly, beauty.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"Brilliant violet. A complex, hugely perfumed bouquet evokes candied boysenberry, cherry liqueur, incense and smoky minerals, and a suave floral overtone slowly builds with aeration. Powerful yet lively, spice- and mineral-accented dark berry, violet pastille and musky rhubarb flavors provide a compelling interplay of depth and energy. Finishes sweet and extremely long, leaving behind zesty mineral, spice and floral notes. This stunning wine is a standout in this excellent Beaujolais vintage." -Josh Raynolds

"From vines planted in 1926 that seldom produce as much as 20 hectoliters per hectare, Daniel Bouland's 2016 Morgon Delys Vieilles Vignes is another superb rendition of a cuvée that's routinely one of the region's most unsung qualitative pinnacles. The wine offers up a deep and incipiently complex bouquet of ripe black cherries, rich soil, iron filings, potpourri and elderberry. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with immense unforced concentration and pitch-perfect balance, underpinned by velvety tannins and succulent acids. After the powerhouse 2015, the 2016 is exquisitely textural and elegant, but don't be fooled, it will see out its 15th birthday in style." -William Kelley
