The great grower Champagnes that excite Champagne lovers these days tend to fall into a certain category, with low dosage, low sulphur, and a decidedly edgy vibe. We love them. But one grower has managed to gain worldwide fame—not to mention a cult-like obsession here in the U.S.—without going in that direction: Bérêche & Fils.

On paper, at least, everything about Bérêche is classical. This starts with history, as this is a domaine that was founded just before the U.S. Civil War. It continues with land. They don't farm some obscure corner of Champagne, but in its historic heart, with plots scattered around the Montagne de Reims and the Vallée de la Marne.

Traditional and classical, perhaps, and yet something sets it apart: sheer excellence. Raphaël and Vincent Bérêche's intense focus on high quality farming and precise work in the cellar is exactly the sort of hard work that was too often missing from the pre-grower Grand Marques. And it results in wines that people—no matter how geeky their Champagne tastes—just love.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 94
"The 2015 Mailly-Champagne is bright, crystalline and wonderfully taut. Mineral and floral notes abound, while the fruit is very much in the background. Mirabelle plum, eau de vie, jasmine, white pepper and crushed rocks give the 2015 its incredibly distinctive upper register. This cool, late-ripening site planted in the 1950s yields a Pinot that is all about nerviness and energy. Just as importantly, there are none of the vegetal notes that lurk under the surface of so many 2015s. Dosage is 3 grams per liter." -Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"The 2015 Grand Cru Mailly-Champagne is showing very well, mingling notes of pear, yellow apple and peach with hints of warm bread, hazelnuts and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, bright and incisive, with tangy acids and an intensely saline finish, it represents a felicitous marriage between vintage and site. It was disgorged in July 2020 with three grams per liter dosage." -William Kelley
