Located on the southern edge of California wine country, Birichino Winery was founded in 2008 by Alex Krause and John Locke, two Bonny Doon alumni. Their name, Birichino (Biri-keeno), literally meaning “naughty” or “mischievous” in Italian, is a riff on the old locksmith trick of adding AAA to the beginning of their names to jump to the beginning of the phone book. Their focus is making harmonious wines, sourcing fruit from old Santa Cruz vineyards to produce food-friendly wines higher in acid and lower in alcohol.
The winemakers put emphasis on the grape varieties they feel most naturally appeal to the senses, Krause and Locke create effortlessly pleasurable wines that focus on balance over power. Approachable in both style and price, these wines are comfortable on any dinner table or picnic blanket.
