There is something incredibly satisfying about a bottle of Grand Puy Lacoste, particularly when it is just entering its peak drinking window. "GPL" is considered a Super Second (so just behind a 1st Growth in quality) and an epitome of fine Pauillac, with its rich blackcurrant and cassis fruit and velvety power.

Antonio Galloni

"The 1990 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a vintage that I drank regularly. It's always backward and compelling. I used to wonder whether it would ever come around. It has. This has a mesmerizing bouquet with black fruit, graphite, licorice and violet aromas. It just ratchets up through the gears with aeration. The palate is surfeit with sapid black fruit tones, slightly granular in texture and armed with firm backbone. Plenty of tobacco notes lace the finish. You know, for a 1990, it remains remarkably backward. This is a Pauillac aging at a glacial pace. Tasted at the WIMPS X-mas lunch at La Trompette." -Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"The 1990 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a wine that I had not tasted for a number of years. For a long time it was stubborn and tannic, uncommon attributes in what was such a comely vintage. Now at 26 years of age, this bottle served by Xavier Borie suggests that finally the 1990 has come round. Deep in color, it has a gorgeous bouquet of black fruit, potpourri, graphite and melted tar. There is warmth here, but it does not impede upon the articulation of its origins in Pauillac. The palate has clearly melted in recent years, and maintains superb balance and weight. Sure, as Robert Parker himself remarked, it is evolving at a glacial paceโ€”slower than the 1998 tasted alongside. That means its pleasure is going to be prolonged over many, many years." -Neal Martin

Jancis Robinson

"Big and sweet and round - seems fuller, richer and a bit older and dustier than the 1989 served alongside. Very long and powerful. Wonderfully rich and opulent."

Wine Spectator

WS 95
"Big and juicy red. Dark color, with coffee bean and chocolate aromas. Full-bodied and velvety, with loads of ripe fruit and a long, flavorful finish."
