Lanessan is from the Left Bank’s Haut-Médoc. This is the land of Cabernet Sauvignon, where Napoleon ordered the Grand Cru Classification of 1855, which resulted in the naming of the very top châteaux of such famous communes as Margaux, Pauillac, and Saint Julien. Lanessan’s vines are actually right up against the famous Grand Cru Classé of Saint Julien, Gruaud-Larose. Lanessan has similar gravel soils and works traditionally (fermentation in concrete and aging in a mix of old and new barrels), producing a classic Left-Bank Bordeaux of approximately Classified Growth quality.

Which raises an interesting question: If this is such a great wine so close to very top terroir, why wasn't it classified in the famous 1855 classification? Turns out the owner didn't want to do the paperwork. And as a result, the wine is one of the best deals in Bordeaux to this day.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

"The finest wine of the decade at this address is the 2016 Lanessan, a terrific effort that unwinds in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cassis, cigar wrapper, sweet soil tones and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, layered and impressively concentrated, with a deep core of fruit, velvety tannins and a penetrating finish, it represents a terrific value—and gives a sense of what this estate is capable of." -Robert Parker

"Lifted aromatic nose. Polished tannins with some inner glow. Dry end. Very solid performance."

"This is an ambitious take on 2016, pushing the vintage but successfully so, going for a cerebral 2010 feel rather than the generosity of 2009. Classic liquorice and slate, tight cassis fruits and an extremely well paced delivery of fresh tight tannins lead into a gorgeous, lifted juicy fruit finish. From a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc. I like this a lot."
