What is this wine?
Scarecrow “M. Étain” Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 is the second label from Scarecrow, one of Napa Valley’s most revered estates. The wine hails from the historic J.J. Cohn Estate Vineyard in Rutherford — planted in 1945 and now farmed organically. Crafted by winemaker Celia Welch, “M. Étain” (French for “tin”) draws primarily from younger vines and select parcels of the same vineyard that produce Scarecrow’s flagship bottling. Like its sibling, it’s 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in French oak (about 90% new) for around 18 months, showcasing Scarecrow’s signature purity and finesse.
Why get this wine?
“M. Étain” delivers the pedigree, depth, and sophistication of Scarecrow at a fraction of the price. It’s consistently among Napa’s most collectible “second wines,” offering plush fruit, polish, and structure that rival many flagship Cabernets. The 2022 vintage — concentrated and balanced after a smaller, high-quality harvest — underscores why Scarecrow remains a benchmark for modern Rutherford elegance.
What does this wine taste like?
Rich yet refined, with layers of cassis, blackberry, graphite, and violet. The palate shows polished tannins, cedar spice, and a long, mineral-driven finish. It’s powerful but poised, with the hallmark Rutherford dust texture.
When should you drink this wine?
Drink 2026–2040. Decant for two hours if enjoying young. Excellent with dry-aged steak, lamb chops, or truffled mushroom dishes.
