From the producer: This cuvée was named in tribute to Louis, Elisabeth Salmon’s brother, who was passionate about oenology and highly involved in winemaking from the earliest creation of the House. Originating from the best parcels of the Côte des Blancs, the Blanc de Blancs vintage is endowed with purity and minerality.

Distinguished elegance of a mineral and exceptionally precise Chardonnay with a natural balance that is a harmonious representation of the best parcels of grand crus of Côte des Blancs: Cramant, Chouilly for the finesse, Avize for the force of character and Mesnil-sur-Oger for the structure and longevity.

Founded in 1818 by Nicolas Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon, the estate is now managed by the seventh generation of the family to do so, brothers François and Antoine Roland-Billecart. The house operates on the philosophy that an early harvest yields more elegant, delicate Champagnes and continues to produce in this structure-driven style that has made them one of the most iconic champagnes of our time.

When the time comes to blend the cuvees, every morning at the cave of Maison Billecart-Salmon a team of family members and employees assemble for a blind tasting. Each wine is analyzed, voted on, and then assigned to an appropriate cuvée.

This painstaking process (tasting vin clair is no picnic) is done with every single wine in the cellar, multiple times over. It guarantees exceptional quality, consistent style, and ensures Billecart remains one of Champagne's greatest houses. In top vintages all that hard work ensures that the Vintage wine is a perfect reflection of everything that year has to offer.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"The 2006 Brut Cuvée Louis Salmon is a fabulous Champagne that balances the natural richness of the year with tons of energy. In this very warm vintage the winemaking team opted to block most of the malolactic fermentation (70%) to preserve freshness, an approach that worked beautifully. The weight of the year is present, but it is balanced by the wine's freshness and energy. Time in the glass brings out hints of chamomile, marzipan and lemon confit. At fifteen years of age, the 2006 is still a young Champagne that requires cellaring. In a word: dazzling." -Antonio Galloni

"The 2006 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Louis Salmon derives from old vines holdings in the same villages that inform Billecart's non-vintage Blanc de Blanc, and it has seen 11 years sur lattes. Wafting from the glass with aromas of warm bread, blanched almonds, dried citrus and fresh pear, it's medium to full-bodied, gourmand and fleshy, with tangy acids and an enveloping core of fruit that lends it a vinous profile, underpinned by lively acids and concluding with a tangy, saline finish. This is a very fine rendition of this cuvée, formerly known as the Prestige Blanc de Blancs." -William Kelley

"Greenish gold. High toned. Quite rich palate entry, then tightens up. Racy and lively. Quite firm, this positively reverberates. Polished texture. Richer than the 2007."

"Formerly called the Prestige Blanc de Blancs, this wine was renamed after the winemaker brother of Elisabeth Salmon for the bicentenary. Both Elisabeth and her husband Nicolas François already have founder's cuvées named in their honour. From 100% grand cru fruit (5% vinified in old oak), this spends 11 years on its lees with partial malolactic fermentation, and has a 6g/l dosage. Mathieu Roland-Billecart describes it as 'Meursault with bubbles', and suggests decanting it into a carafe and enjoying it throughout a meal. It's very rich and full, yet with bright, balancing acidity and chalky minerality. It has gorgeous notes of apricot tart, popcorn, vanilla sugar and nougat, and is long, tight and rich. Drinking beautifully now, but still has many years ahead of it." -Tina Gellie

"With grapes coming from the Chardonnay heartland of the Côte des Blancs, this wine is the epitome of structured, textured fruit but with the essential addition of age. Still hinting at freshness and still textured, the wine is also rich with white-fruit flavors cut with limes. Drink from 2020." -Roger Voss
