What is this wine?
Domaine Paul Pillot, now led by Thierry Pillot, is one of the most sought-after names in modern Burgundy, known for producing precise, mineral-driven whites that emphasize terroir expression over weight. La Grande Montagne is a high-altitude premier cru in Chassagne-Montrachet, with thin limestone soils that yield taut, racy, and elegant Chardonnay. The 2020 vintage was warm but balanced, giving wines of concentration, freshness, and outstanding aging potential.

Why get this wine?
Thierry Pillot has built a reputation for making some of the most refined and transparent Chassagne-Montrachets today. La Grande Montagne showcases his style beautifully—tense, mineral, and detailed, offering superb precision at a more approachable price point than the domaine’s top crus. For Burgundy collectors, this is a rare insider’s wine from a rising star.

What does this wine taste like?
Citrus and green apple with hints of pear, chalk, and white flowers. Focused and mineral-driven, with vibrant acidity, fine texture, and a long, saline finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Drink 2024–2038. Decant if opening young. Excellent with oysters, grilled fish, roast chicken, or alpine cheeses.

Thierry Pillot is killing it! He is a super-talented vigneron, and since he has taken over his family's domain the quality has gone through the roof. He is one of those rare characters who is equally good at making red and white wines.

They have 13 hectares of vines in the domaine, 1/3 red and 2/3 white. The whites are very concentrated because of the frost and the reds are supple and elegant, really classic. Like many young vignerons, Thierry has also set up a micro-negociant under his own name.

Professional Reviews

Burghound

"Fresh and very bright aromas of green apple, lemon confit, quinine and a hint of smoke slide seamlessly into racy, beautifully delineated and once again, utterly delicious flavors that brim with minerality on the mildly austere, focused and sneaky long finale. This presently isn't quite as complex as the Clos St. Jean, but it is notably finer, and I suspect that more depth will almost certainly develop if given a few years of cellaring."

"The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet La Grande Montagne 1er Cru has an effervescent, sorbet-fresh bouquet with lime, orange zest and crushed stone aromas. The terroir is beautifully shown here and gains pixelation with time in the glass. The palate is nicely balanced with a Puligny-like tension, yet the fruit profile is not as malic. This is definitely more Chassagne in style, with a dash of white pepper and bitter orange toward the finish. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting." -Neal Martin

"The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Grand Montagne opens in the glass with notes of pear, orange oil, white flowers and hazelnuts. Medium to full-bodied, it's elegant and tensile, with fine depth at the core, racy acids and a long, saline finish." -William Kelley

"Both sections of Grande Montagne are among the highest elevation premier crus in Chassagne. The altitude means the wines are almost more Puligny in style, with plenty of tension and what Thierry Pillot rightly describes as 'peps', winemaker-speak for a peppy, lemony tang that is perfect for the purity of the Pillot style. There is still majestic richness to this wine, with a concentration on the palate that testifies to the wine's ability to age for decades." -Charles Curtis MW
